Kelly Reilly Started Acting at Seventeen
Kelly Reilly grew up outside London and became fascinated with serious theater while still at school. She has credited drama teachers with introducing her to writers including Chekhov, Ibsen and Shakespeare. Reilly landed her first professional television role at 17 in Prime Suspect, working opposite Helen Mirren. She did not follow a traditional drama-school route, instead learning through professional roles and intense personal study. Kelly Reilly received the role of Beth Dutton after a passionate conversation with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan rather than a conventional audition. She later admitted she was terrified because she initially did not know how to find the character. Reilly transformed herself through a Montana accent, blond hair, and an aggressive physical confidence far removed from her reserved British personality. Yellowstone debuted in 2018, and Beth eventually became the role most audiences associated with Reilly.

Kelly Reilly visibly changed her appearance after finishing Yellowstone. In 2024, she dyed her hair red while preparing to play former detective Jackie Ellis in the Welsh crime drama Under Salt Marsh. Reilly described changing characters as a way of clearing space for another woman to emerge. The new color also highlighted something audiences sometimes forget: Beth Dutton’s blond appearance was part of a carefully constructed character rather than Reilly’s permanent screen identity.
Kelly Reilly Now Leads Dutton Ranch
Kelly Reilly returned as Beth in 2026 for Dutton Ranch, continuing the story with Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler and Finn Little’s Carter. Reilly and Hauser also became executive producers, giving them greater responsibility for the characters they had inhabited for years. The spinoff moves Beth and Rip from Montana to Texas and asks who they become after the original family struggle ends. Reilly’s transformation now includes another step: from supporting ensemble actor to franchise lead and producer.
