Amy Schumer is turning one of the biggest changes in her personal life into material for the big screen. The comedian and actress is set to star in and produce Best Divorce Ever, a new comedy about a couple who decide to end their 20 year marriage while attempting to remain on good terms. The project arrives as Schumer herself goes through a divorce from Chris Fischer, making the timing particularly striking. Rather than treating divorce purely as a painful ending, the film aims to find the absurdity and humor in starting over.
She Is Drawing From a Major Life Change
Schumer’s new project comes at an unusually personal moment. She and husband Chris Fischer split after seven years of marriage, with Schumer filing for divorce in early 2026. The pair share a young son and have emphasized maintaining their family relationship despite the end of their marriage. Now, Schumer is taking the subject of divorce into her professional world, using comedy to explore the complicated emotions and awkward situations that can accompany the end of a long relationship.
She Will Star as Clarissa
In Best Divorce Ever, Schumer will play Clarissa, one half of a couple who have spent two decades together before deciding that their marriage should end. Rather than allowing their separation to become bitter, Clarissa and Franklin attempt to remain friends and create a surprisingly unconventional arrangement. The role gives Schumer plenty of room to combine her trademark comedy with the more emotional realities of relationships, family and starting over after years together.
The Couple Wants an Amicable Split
Clarissa and Franklin are determined not to turn their divorce into a traditional battle. Instead, they decide to separate while continuing to care about each other and their family. Their plan sounds almost too perfect, which is exactly where the comedy begins. They even organize an “Untying the Knot” party to celebrate the end of their marriage. What initially appears to be an impressively mature separation soon becomes considerably more complicated as they attempt to navigate their new lives.
Things Quickly Descend Into Chaos
Of course, a supposedly perfect divorce does not remain perfect for long. As Clarissa and Franklin begin adjusting to life outside their marriage, awkward dates, complicated emotions and unexpected problems begin getting in the way. Their children also become suspicious of their parents’ unusual approach to separation. The movie promises to explore the messy reality behind the idea of a “conscious uncoupling,” turning what could be a serious subject into an opportunity for plenty of uncomfortable and ridiculous situations.
Schumer Is Also Producing the Film
Schumer is not simply stepping in front of the camera for Best Divorce Ever. She will also produce the movie alongside Matthew Lee Miller and Natalie Metzger through Vanishing Angle. Concourse Media and Archetype Media Finance are financing the project, with Concourse preparing to launch worldwide sales at the Toronto market. Taking on a producing role gives Schumer additional creative involvement in a story that is particularly relevant to her current circumstances.
The Story Is Not Entirely About Schumer
Although Schumer’s own divorce makes the premise especially timely, Best Divorce Ever is not simply an adaptation of her personal life. The screenplay comes from writer director Sean Mullin, whose own amicable divorce helped inspire the story. The project is therefore built around a broader idea of what happens when two people realize their marriage is no longer working but still want to remain connected. Schumer’s casting brings her own perspective to the material without making the film purely autobiographical.

Turning uncomfortable subjects into comedy has been a major part of Schumer’s career. Best Divorce Ever gives her another opportunity to tackle a subject that can be painful and awkward while finding the ridiculous moments hidden within it. The project could therefore feel very natural for the comedian.

Best Divorce Ever arrives as Schumer begins a new chapter both personally and professionally. Her most recent acting project was Netflix’s Kinda Pregnant, and she has now chosen another relationship centered comedy that allows her to explore a very different stage of adulthood. With her real life experience giving the subject added resonance, Schumer could bring an unusually personal perspective to Clarissa’s journey. For an actress known for turning life’s awkward moments into laughs, divorce may prove to be her next unexpected source of comedy.
