Jessica Lange Is Finally Coming Back to American Horror Story, But She Had One Demand

Jessica Lange is returning to American Horror Story for its highly anticipated 13th season, nearly a decade after her last appearance. The Oscar winner had previously insisted that she was finished with the anthology series, but creator Ryan Murphy eventually convinced her to come back for a special “greatest hits” season. There was just one condition: Lange wanted to sing.

She Was Done With the Series

After starring in the first four seasons of American Horror Story, Lange announced in 2015 that she was finished with the show. She had played four memorable characters and felt that her time with the anthology had reached a natural conclusion. Although she briefly returned as Constance Langdon in Season 8, a full comeback seemed extremely unlikely.

Ryan Murphy Finally Changed Her Mind

Murphy had apparently spent years hoping to bring Lange back. When he finally sat down with her to discuss Season 13, he pitched it as a celebration of the show’s history. He believed the ambitious “greatest hits” concept could not work properly without the actress who helped define the series from the beginning.

Lange Had One Condition

Lange agreed to return, but she wanted something specific in exchange. Her condition was simple: she had to get a musical number. Murphy agreed, opening the door for Lange to combine her acting talents with the singing performances that became memorable parts of her earlier AHS appearances.

The musical request is not completely out of character for Lange. One of her most famous AHS moments came in Asylum, when Sister Jude performed “The Name Game.” She later performed several songs as Elsa Mars in Freak Show, including David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?”

This comeback is bigger than simply bringing Constance Langdon back. Lange is set to revisit all four of her previous AHS characters: Constance from Murder House, Sister Jude from Asylum, Fiona Goode from Coven, and Elsa Mars from Freak Show.

Lange’s performance as Constance Langdon in the first season helped establish American Horror Story as a major television phenomenon. Her portrayal earned her an Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award, making the character one of the most recognizable figures in the show’s history.

Season 13 is shaping up to be a huge reunion for longtime fans, with Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett and other familiar faces also returning. Murphy has described the season as a “greatest hits” installment designed to revisit the show’s origins while bringing its most memorable characters together.

After years of saying she was finished with the franchise, Lange is officially back. American Horror Story: 13 is scheduled to premiere on September 24, 2026, on FX and Hulu, giving fans another chance to see the actress who helped make the series famous. And thanks to her one condition, audiences can apparently expect at least one more memorable musical moment from Lange.
