Matt LeBlanc Had Several Short-Lived TV Roles
Matt LeBlanc worked in commercials and television before becoming Joey Tribbiani. His credits included Top of the Heap, a Married… with Children spinoff that lasted only briefly. The setbacks left LeBlanc far from financial security when Friends arrived. Joey’s success completely changed his professional identity, turning an actor associated with unsuccessful series into one of television’s best-known comic performers.
Matthew Perry Chased Sitcom Success for Years
Matthew Perry had been acting since his teens and accumulated roles in projects including A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon and several television series. None gave him the lasting recognition he wanted. He remained deeply committed to comedy, and Chandler Bing finally provided a character that matched his rapid delivery and distinctive timing. David Schwimmer Came From Theater and Television
David Schwimmer brought substantial theater experience to Friends and had already appeared in series including L.A. Law, The Wonder Years and NYPD Blue. Director James Burrows took the six actors to Las Vegas before Friends aired and reportedly urged them to enjoy their remaining anonymity. His prediction proved remarkably accurate.
