Not every disputed celebrity birthday represents the same thing, however. Some stars openly admitted lying, while other cases became much more complicated public disputes.
Carla Gugino Said She Was Fourteen
Carla Gugino openly admitted lying about her age to land Troop Beverly Hills. Gugino was actually 16 but told filmmakers she was 14 because she believed her real age would cost her the part. She later confessed to director Jeff Kanew during production, and he told her he would not have hired her had he known.
Mila Kunis Hid Being Only Fourteen
Mila Kunis was 14 when she auditioned for That ’70s Show, even though performers were supposed to be at least 18. Kunis later confirmed that she lied, famously explaining that she told producers she would be 18 on her birthday without specifying which birthday. Sandra Bullock Changed Her Age for Casting
Sandra Bullock has acknowledged altering her age early in her career because casting expectations were restricting the roles she could pursue. Reporting on her 1992 Barbara Walters interview says Bullock admitted lying about her age while seeking the lead in Love Potion No. 9. Her story illustrates how age manipulation could work in either direction when actors were considered “wrong” for a part.
Gabrielle Carteris Hid Her Age on 90210
Gabrielle Carteris was 29 when she began playing high-school student Andrea Zuckerman on Beverly Hills, 90210. Carteris has since publicly discussed lying about her age while pursuing the show because she feared producers would immediately reject an actor approaching 30 for a teenage character. The striking real-life age difference later became one of television’s best-known casting facts.
Whoopi Goldberg Lied to Work Younger
Whoopi Goldberg’s age deception came long before movie stardom. The American Academy of Achievement reports that after leaving school young, Goldberg lied about her age to obtain work as a summer-camp counselor and to perform in choruses of stage productions. Unlike Hollywood examples involving actors pretending to be younger, Goldberg was making herself old enough to access opportunities unavailable to her actual age.
Rebel Wilson’s Age Became a Legal Battle
Rebel Wilson’s case is important because it should not be casually described as a proven age lie. Australian publications accused Wilson of misrepresenting details including her age, prompting a defamation lawsuit. Wilson won substantial damages at trial, although the award was later reduced on appeal. Her dispute demonstrates why old online lists should distinguish admitted deception from contested allegations.

The stories differ, but a repeated pattern is clear: performers believed a number could determine whether they were even allowed to audition. Carla Gugino and Mila Kunis altered their ages for specific roles, while others navigated an industry deeply preoccupied with youth. That context does not make dishonesty factual where it has not been proven, but it helps explain why celebrity age stories persist.
