Willem Dafoe has already technically been part of the James Bond universe, but the acclaimed actor now says he would be interested in taking that connection one step further. In a recent interview, Dafoe discussed his experience playing a Bond villain in the 2004 video game James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing and revealed that he would consider appearing in a live-action Bond project if the right opportunity came along. For an actor known for some of cinema’s most memorable villains, the possibility is certainly intriguing.
He Has Already Played a Bond Villain

Dafoe’s connection to 007 goes back more than two decades. In Everything or Nothing, he portrayed Nikolai Diavolo, a former KGB agent and the game’s main antagonist. The project featured an unusually starry cast for a video game, with Pierce Brosnan reprising his role as James Bond alongside Dafoe, Judi Dench and Heidi Klum. Dafoe provided both his voice and likeness for the character, giving him an unusual place in Bond history.
The actor recently reflected on the experience and admitted that making video games was still relatively new territory for performers at the time. He recalled that his recording session was remarkably quick and informal, with much of the character’s performance coming together on the spot. Despite the unconventional process, he has learned that fans still remember the game fondly.
A Live-Action Bond Role Could Tempt Him

Although Dafoe was careful not to turn his comments into a casting announcement, he made it clear that he would be open to returning to the franchise in a live-action capacity. He explained that he has watched Bond films throughout his life and recognized that the series has a very particular identity.
That familiarity appears to be part of what makes the possibility appealing. Rather than actively campaigning for a role, Dafoe suggested that he would simply consider the opportunity if something appropriate came his way. His comments leave the door open without suggesting that he has actually been offered a part in an upcoming movie.
He Could Be a Natural Bond Villain

Dafoe’s filmography makes the idea of him playing a Bond antagonist particularly easy to imagine. He has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to portray characters who are unpredictable, intimidating and psychologically complicated.
His performance as Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin in the Spider-Man films remains one of his best-known villainous roles. He has also played sinister or morally ambiguous characters in films including Shadow of the Vampire, The Lighthouse and The Northman. That history gives him plenty of experience with the kind of larger-than-life personalities that have traditionally populated the Bond universe.
At the same time, Dafoe’s range means he would not necessarily have to play a straightforward villain. The modern Bond franchise has often favored antagonists with more complicated motivations, giving an actor of his caliber plenty of possibilities.
His Career Has Never Followed One Formula

One reason a Bond appearance would fit naturally into Dafoe’s career is that he has never limited himself to one type of movie. He has moved effortlessly between independent films, major studio productions, historical dramas, comedies, thrillers and fantasy projects.
His four Academy Award nominations reflect that versatility, with recognition for performances in Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire, The Florida Project and At Eternity’s Gate. He has also collaborated with filmmakers including Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Robert Eggers and Yorgos Lanthimos.
That eclectic filmography means Dafoe could approach a Bond role with considerably more than conventional villainy. He has spent decades finding unusual details in characters that might otherwise appear familiar.
The Actor Has a History With Major Franchises

Dafoe is no stranger to enormous movie franchises. His work as the Green Goblin brought him into the world of Marvel, where he eventually returned to the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. His willingness to revisit the character decades after his original performance demonstrated that he is not opposed to returning to familiar cinematic worlds when the project interests him.
His Bond experience is different because it happened in a video game rather than a feature film, but it gives him an especially unusual connection to the franchise. If he eventually appeared on screen in a Bond movie, he would essentially be moving from one form of the series to another.
He Knows How to Make Villains Memorable

The biggest advantage Dafoe would bring to a Bond film is his ability to make even eccentric characters feel strangely believable. His villains are rarely simple caricatures. Instead, he often gives them distinctive mannerisms, unpredictable emotional shifts and enough humanity to make audiences curious about what drives them.
That quality would work particularly well in a franchise that has gradually moved away from purely cartoonish villains. Modern Bond antagonists have often been written with personal histories and emotional motivations, allowing performers to explore more complicated relationships between hero and villain.
Dafoe’s approach to acting could therefore make him an especially interesting choice if the filmmakers wanted an antagonist who feels genuinely unpredictable.
The New Bond Era Is Still Taking Shape

Dafoe’s comments arrive at an interesting time for the franchise. With Daniel Craig’s run as James Bond having concluded with No Time to Die, the series is preparing for another major transition. Amazon MGM Studios is developing the next phase of the franchise, with longtime producers and new creative leadership determining the direction of the character.
As of now, Dafoe’s comments should not be interpreted as confirmation that he has been cast in the next Bond movie. His remarks amount to an expression of interest rather than an official announcement. Still, with casting speculation surrounding the franchise, comments from established actors naturally attract attention.
Could Willem Dafoe Finally Make It to the Big Screen?

There is something fitting about Dafoe potentially making the jump from a Bond video game to a live-action Bond movie. He already knows the world, has experience playing its villains and has demonstrated throughout his career that he can make unconventional characters unforgettable.
Whether the filmmakers actually have a role in mind for him remains unknown. For now, Dafoe is simply saying that he would be interested if the right opportunity appeared. But considering his extraordinary range and long history of playing fascinating antagonists, it is easy to understand why the idea has captured fans’ imaginations. After all, Dafoe has already played one Bond villain. Perhaps Hollywood will eventually decide that one appearance was not enough.
