Taylor Lautner became internationally recognizable as Jacob Black, but keeping the role required one of the Twilight saga’s most dramatic physical transformations.
He later revealed that the pressure to maintain that muscular image affected how he viewed his own body long after filming ended.
Taylor Lautner Started as a Martial Artist

Taylor Lautner’s athletic background began before acting. He trained seriously in martial arts as a child, competed successfully and was already performing complicated physical movements before Hollywood became his main career. That experience helped him land action-oriented childhood roles, most notably Sharkboy in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Taylor Lautner Almost Lost Jacob Role

Taylor Lautner played Jacob in the first Twilight, but producers considered replacing him for New Moon because the character undergoes a major physical transformation in the books. Lautner decided to prove he could change sufficiently for the sequel. Even after doing so, he later revealed that he still had to reaudition for the part.
Taylor Lautner Added Muscle for New Moon

Taylor Lautner ate more and trained intensely between the first two films, ultimately adding roughly 30 pounds as Jacob developed into a werewolf. His shirtless physique quickly became central to the franchise’s marketing and fan culture. What helped secure his biggest role also created an appearance standard Lautner later realized would be difficult to live with permanently.
Taylor Lautner Faced Body Image Pressure

Taylor Lautner later explained that being celebrated constantly for having an “unbelievable” body changed how he judged himself. Once Twilight ended and he stopped maintaining the same extreme condition, photos comparing his body began circulating online. Lautner said learning to accept a healthier, less rigid relationship with his appearance required time.
Taylor Lautner Stepped Away From Spotlight

Taylor Lautner’s post-Twilight career became much quieter than those of Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart. He continued with projects including Cuckoo, Scream Queens and Home Team, but he stopped pursuing nonstop movie stardom. That distance gave him room to reconsider what he valued after experiencing enormous fame while still extremely young.
Taylor Lautner Built Life Beyond Acting

Taylor Lautner married Tay Dome in November 2022. The couple later launched The Squeeze, a podcast centered partly on mental health and personal conversations. Lautner’s willingness to discuss body image, fame and insecurity publicly represents a striking change from the period when much of his celebrity identity was reduced to Jacob Black’s appearance.
Taylor Lautner Is Preparing for Fatherhood

Taylor Lautner and his wife announced in March 2026 that they are expecting their first child. In June, they revealed the baby is a girl, and Lautner said becoming a “girl dad” had long been something he hoped for. His latest transformation therefore has little to do with muscle: he is moving into fatherhood at 34.
