Ryan Gosling Is Finally Becoming the Ghost Rider Fans Have Wanted for Years

After years of speculation, Ryan Gosling is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider. Marvel made the surprise announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026, confirming that the Oscar-nominated actor will headline a new Ghost Rider movie directed by Shawn Levy. The project has since received an official theatrical release date of July 28, 2028, making it one of Marvel’s major upcoming releases. For fans who have spent years imagining Gosling as the fiery Marvel hero, the long-running dream has finally become reality.

Gosling’s connection to Ghost Rider goes back well before Marvel officially cast him. The actor had repeatedly expressed an interest in playing the character, making him one of the most popular fan choices for a potential reboot. What made the rumors especially convincing was Gosling’s own enthusiasm for the role. He wasn’t simply being suggested by fans; he had openly talked about wanting the part. Now, after years of speculation, Marvel has given him the opportunity to put his own interpretation on one of the company’s most distinctive supernatural characters.

Marvel Finally Made It Official

The announcement came during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where Gosling appeared onstage to the enormous reaction expected from a character reveal of this size. Kevin Feige confirmed that Gosling would star in the new film, while the actor himself acknowledged how long he had wanted the opportunity. The studio has now placed Ghost Rider firmly on its theatrical schedule, with July 28, 2028, confirmed as the release date. That gives Marvel plenty of time to develop the project into a major new chapter for the character.

He Helped Get the Project Moving

One of the most interesting details surrounding the casting is that Gosling reportedly did more than simply express an interest in Ghost Rider. According to reports, he approached Marvel with his own ideas for a movie and specific comic-book material that interested him. That reportedly helped convince Kevin Feige that the actor had a genuine creative interest in the character. Gosling’s involvement therefore appears to have begun with a desire to make the right kind of Ghost Rider film, rather than simply wanting another major superhero credit on his résumé.

Gosling will reunite with director Shawn Levy, creating a partnership that is already expanding across two major franchises. The pair are working together on Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled for 2027, and their collaboration will continue with Ghost Rider. Levy is already familiar with the Marvel world after directing Deadpool & Wolverine, while his work with Gosling on Starfighter has apparently created a strong creative relationship between the two. Levy has described Gosling as a particularly collaborative performer, making their reunion an intriguing part of the new Marvel project.

Johnny Blaze Is Returning to the Big Screen

The new film is expected to center on Johnny Blaze, the classic version of Ghost Rider. In Marvel Comics, Blaze is a motorcycle stunt performer whose supernatural transformation turns him into the Spirit of Vengeance. The character is instantly recognizable thanks to his flaming skull, supernatural abilities and iconic motorcycle. Nicolas Cage previously portrayed Johnny Blaze in two live-action films, while Gabriel Luna played Robbie Reyes in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gosling’s version will mark a fresh big-screen interpretation and his first official superhero role in the MCU.

Ghost Rider isn’t the only enormous franchise waiting for Gosling. Before his Marvel debut, he will appear in Star Wars: Starfighter, another major project directed by Levy. Gosling plays Kade Auberon in the new Star Wars story, which is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027. Having leading roles in both Star Wars and Marvel within the same period represents a remarkable new phase of Gosling’s career, especially considering that he has spent much of his career moving between dramas, comedies and original blockbusters.

The release of Ghost Rider will make 2028 an especially busy year for Marvel Studios. The movie is scheduled for July 28, following the new X-Men film in May and preceding Black Panther 3 in December. That gives Marvel three major theatrical releases spread across the year. The studio is also heading toward major crossover events with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning Ghost Rider could arrive in the MCU at a time when the franchise is introducing an increasingly wide range of heroes and supernatural stories.

For Gosling, Ghost Rider represents the payoff to an interest he has maintained for years, while for Marvel, the casting brings one of Hollywood’s biggest stars into a character with enormous potential. There are still plenty of unanswered questions about the story, supporting cast and exactly how Johnny Blaze will fit into the MCU, but the essentials are now official. Shawn Levy is directing, Gosling is playing the title character and the movie is coming in 2028. After years of fan speculation, Ryan Gosling isn’t just being fancast as Ghost Rider anymore—he really is the Spirit of Vengeance.
