Tramell Tillman is no stranger to secrecy, thanks to his Emmy winning role as Mr. Milchick in Severance, but Marvel took things to another level. When Tillman was offered a role in Spider Man: Brand New Day, he had to sign nondisclosure agreements before he could even learn the full details. The actor admitted that the secrecy was frustrating because he initially had little idea how his character would fit into the movie. Still, he ultimately took the leap of faith.
Marvel Kept His Role Under Wraps

Tillman was already an established actor when Marvel approached him about Spider Man: Brand New Day, but even he was surprised by how little information he received. He reportedly had to sign nondisclosure agreements before meeting director Destin Daniel Cretton. During their conversations, Cretton could reveal only limited details, leaving Tillman to decide whether the mysterious opportunity was worth pursuing without knowing exactly what he was signing up for.
The Secrecy Was Frustrating

For Tillman, the secrecy created an unusual challenge. He admitted that it was frustrating not knowing exactly where his character fit into the larger story. Whenever he asked Cretton for more information, the director could only provide vague answers. Tillman understood why Marvel wanted to protect its surprises, particularly because the film involved major connections to the wider Marvel universe, but he still found it difficult to prepare for a role when so much remained hidden.
He Took a Leap of Faith

With so many details unavailable, Tillman had to make an important career decision based largely on trust. Cretton told him that the character would have a pivotal role, but could not explain much beyond that. Tillman recalled wondering whether he should accept the opportunity or wait for another Marvel project with fewer restrictions. Ultimately, he decided to take the leap, trusting the filmmakers and believing that the mysterious role could become something special.
He Plays Bill Metzger

Tillman ultimately took on the role of Bill Metzger, a government official and head of Damage Control. The department is responsible for dealing with the destruction and dangers created by superheroes, giving Metzger an important position within the film’s world. The character also has connections to Marvel’s mutant storyline, making his involvement more significant than audiences might initially expect. That connection was one of the reasons Marvel was so determined to keep details about his role secret.
He Helped Shape Metzger

Because Tillman was given relatively little information at first, he had to work closely with Cretton and writer Justin Kuritzkes to figure out who Metzger really was. They eventually developed him as someone with a corporate background and political instincts. Tillman saw an opportunity to create a character who appeared calm and trustworthy while potentially hiding more complicated motivations. That ambiguity became an important part of how he approached the role.
Barack Obama Inspired His Performance

Interestingly, Tillman looked to former President Barack Obama when developing Metzger’s personality. He imagined the character as someone possessing confidence, calmness, smoothness, and a certain understated charisma. Rather than making Metzger overly aggressive, Tillman wanted audiences to believe in him and trust his authority. He then combined those qualities with his own interpretation, creating a character who could appear reassuring while still leaving viewers wondering about his true intentions.
He Was Protecting a Bigger Marvel Secret

The secrecy surrounding Tillman’s character was partly connected to the movie’s wider surprises, including Sadie Sink’s role and the arrival of mutant related elements in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has explained that there was a deliberate reason for keeping certain casting details hidden. Tillman’s character is connected to that larger storyline, meaning even revealing too much about Metzger could have spoiled other major developments for audiences.
The Secret Is Finally Out

After months of keeping quiet, Tillman can finally discuss his role and celebrate the experience openly. Once the movie was released and the secrets were revealed, he said it was a delight to celebrate with Tom Holland, Zendaya, Cretton, and the rest of the cast. What began as a frustratingly mysterious job ultimately became another major achievement for Tillman, who has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most exciting rising stars following his acclaimed work in Severance.
