Hollywood has never been too concerned with matching an actor’s age exactly to a character’s. In fact, some of the most famous movie and TV roles were played by actors who were years, and sometimes decades, older than the people they portrayed. Here are 10 actors who convincingly played characters much younger than themselves.
Stockard Channing in Grease

One of the most famous examples ever. Stockard Channing was 33 when she played high school student Betty Rizzo in Grease. Despite being well past her teenage years, she became one of the film’s standout stars.
Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls

Rachel McAdams was 25 when she stepped into the role of high school queen bee Regina George. Audiences bought it completely, and the performance remains one of the most iconic teen movie roles of the 2000s.
Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield was 27 when he first played Peter Parker, who was still a high school student. His youthful appearance helped make the age gap less noticeable.
Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man

Tobey Maguire was also in his mid-20s when he played teenage Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. He was actually around 26 during filming.
Thomas Brodie-Sangster in The Queen’s Gambit

Many viewers assumed Thomas Brodie-Sangster was much younger than he actually was. He was nearly 30 when he played chess star Benny Watts, a character generally perceived to be in his early twenties.
Stacey Dash in Clueless

Stacey Dash was 28 when she played high school student Dionne Davenport in Clueless. Even today, many viewers are shocked when they discover how much older she was than her character.
Keiko Agena in Gilmore Girls

Keiko Agena played Rory Gilmore’s best friend Lane Kim throughout much of the series. She was around 27 when the show began, despite portraying a teenager.
Ben McKenzie in The O.C.

Ben McKenzie was 25 when he landed the role of troubled teen Ryan Atwood. Like many actors in teen dramas, he was significantly older than the character he played.
Jason Earles in Hannah Montana

Jason Earles may hold one of the biggest age gaps on this list. He was in his late twenties when he played Jackson Stewart, the teenage brother of Miley Stewart on Hannah Montana.
Final Thoughts

Casting older actors as teenagers has long been a Hollywood tradition. Sometimes it’s because older performers have more experience, and sometimes it’s simply easier from a production standpoint. Whatever the reason, these actors proved that age on paper doesn’t always determine whether a performance feels believable on screen.
