Stars Who Stepped Away From Hollywood

Walking away from Hollywood does not always mean leaving forever. Some stars quit acting permanently, while others disappeared for years before a specific project convinced them to return. The reasons range from raising children and changing careers to simply realizing that performing was no longer what they wanted.

These eight stories show very different versions of leaving the spotlight. Bridget Fonda appears content in retirement, while Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis eventually returned. Others, including the Olsen twins and Jennette McCurdy, found entirely new professional identities outside the acting careers that first made them famous.

Cameron Diaz Leaves Acting

Cameron Diaz was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars when she stepped away after Annie in 2014. The break ultimately lasted about a decade, during which she focused on family and other ventures rather than maintaining a regular acting schedule. Diaz eventually returned in Netflix’s Back in Action in 2025 and has continued taking new projects since then. Her story is therefore less about permanent retirement than reclaiming control over when she wanted to work. Diaz has described fame as a complicated journey, and her comeback shows that leaving Hollywood does not prevent someone from returning on very different terms later.

Rick Moranis Leaves Hollywood

Rick Moranis stepped away from live-action Hollywood during the 1990s after the death of his wife, Ann Belsky, so he could concentrate on raising their children. He continued some voice work and creative projects, but largely disappeared from the kind of major movies that had made him famous through Ghostbusters, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Spaceballs. Decades later, he agreed to return as Dark Helmet in Spaceballs: The New One. Moranis has now described the comeback as an excellent decision, but his long absence remains one of Hollywood’s clearest examples of family taking priority over a successful career.

Bridget Fonda Leaves Hollywood

Bridget Fonda had a strong 1990s film career that included Single White Female, Jackie Brown, A Simple Plan and Lake Placid. Then she simply stopped acting. Her final screen work came in 2002, and she has remained largely outside public life ever since. Unlike stars who repeatedly tease a comeback, Fonda has given little indication that she wants to restart her career. Rare photographs of her continue to attract attention precisely because she has stayed so private. Her decision stands out in an industry where famous actors often maintain some connection to publicity long after their most active years.

Daniel Day-Lewis Retires

Daniel Day-Lewis formally announced his retirement from acting in 2017 after Phantom Thread. For years, the three-time Oscar winner appeared to have made the decision permanent. Then his son Ronan Day-Lewis developed Anemone, and the opportunity to work together persuaded him to return. The film premiered in 2025, ending an eight-year absence. Day-Lewis later joked about having made himself look foolish by publicly announcing retirement and then coming back, but said refusing the chance to collaborate with his son would have been worse. His return turned one of Hollywood’s firmest retirements into a family-driven comeback.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Leave Acting

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen spent much of childhood in front of cameras, beginning as Michelle Tanner on Full House before building an enormous direct-to-video and television business. Eventually, both moved away from acting. Ashley’s last major film was New York Minute in 2004, while Mary-Kate officially retired several years later. Their focus shifted toward fashion, particularly The Row, which they launched in the mid-2000s. Rather than attempting to remain celebrity actresses while designing on the side, the sisters built a new identity around luxury fashion and became much less publicly accessible than they had been as child stars.

Jennette McCurdy Quits Acting

Jennette McCurdy became famous through Nickelodeon shows including iCarly and Sam & Cat, but she later explained that acting had never truly been her own passion. After leaving the profession, McCurdy spoke openly about the unhappiness she associated with childhood fame and the pressure she experienced while working. Her 2022 memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died became a major publishing success and helped establish her as a writer rather than a former child actor searching for another screen role. By 2026, her creative work was centered on writing and producing, making her departure from acting feel like a genuine career change.

Peter Ostrum Leaves Acting

Peter Ostrum had one of the most unusual exits from Hollywood. He played Charlie Bucket in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, a role that could easily have led to more child-acting opportunities. Instead, Ostrum decided not to build a film career. He eventually studied veterinary medicine and spent decades working as a veterinarian in New York before retiring from that profession in 2022. His life became dramatically different from the normal path of a child star. Even though the movie remained beloved and continued introducing his performance to new generations, Ostrum chose a stable career almost entirely outside entertainment.

Andrea Barber Leaves Acting

Andrea Barber was known to millions as Kimmy Gibbler on Full House, but when the sitcom ended in 1995, she stepped away from acting. Barber pursued education, built a family life, and did not spend those years trying to remain visible in Hollywood. Her eventual return came because Fuller House revived the characters and reunited much of the original cast. She therefore represents another kind of exit: someone who left because ordinary life appealed more than chasing additional roles, then returned when a very specific project connected to her past felt worthwhile. Her acting break lasted roughly two decades.
