Leonardo DiCaprio and 7 Hollywood Stars Then and Now

Hollywood careers rarely follow one simple path. Some performers begin as teen idols, television actors, or romantic leads before developing into award winners, producers, and long-term franchise stars.

These eight actors demonstrate how early fame can evolve. The comparison focuses on career growth and changing roles rather than judging natural aging or speculating about anyone’s appearance.

DiCaprio moved from television and youthful films into critical acclaim with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which brought his first Oscar nomination. Romeo + Juliet and Titanic then made him an international star. He later built a long relationship with director Martin Scorsese and won Best Actor for The Revenant. In 2026, he earned another nomination for One Battle After Another, confirming that his career remains centered on major director-led films rather than nostalgia for his teen-idol years.

Winslet earned an Oscar nomination for Sense and Sensibility before Titanic transformed her into a worldwide celebrity. She deliberately followed the blockbuster with smaller and more challenging films, including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Winslet later won Best Actress for The Reader and expanded into acclaimed television through Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown. Her career now moves comfortably between intimate drama, television and large productions such as the Avatar films.

Brad Pitt

Pitt’s brief appearance in Thelma & Louise helped establish him as a 1990s leading man. He later pursued darker and less predictable roles in Se7en, 12 Monkeys and Fight Club. Pitt also became an influential producer through Plan B Entertainment. He won an acting Oscar for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and later produced and starred in F1, which received a Best Picture nomination at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Roberts moved from Mystic Pizza and an Oscar-nominated performance in Steel Magnolias to global stardom through Pretty Woman. She became one of Hollywood’s defining romantic-comedy performers while also taking dramatic roles. Roberts won Best Actress for Erin Brockovich in 2001. Her later projects, including August: Osage County, Ben Is Back and Leave the World Behind, have relied on the authority and familiarity she developed across decades of leading roles.

Kidman first gained major Hollywood visibility through Days of Thunder but gradually built a career based on riskier material. To Die For, Eyes Wide Shut, Moulin Rouge! and The Others challenged the glamorous image attached to her early fame. She won Best Actress for The Hours and later became an important television producer and star through Big Little Lies, The Undoing and other limited series. Her career remains unusually active across film and streaming television.

Reeves became known through River’s Edge, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Point Break and Speed before The Matrix made him a defining action star of the late 1990s. His career later experienced uneven periods, but John Wick created a major resurgence by using his physical discipline and restrained screen presence. Reeves now connects several generations of fans, from audiences who remember Ted Logan to viewers who discovered him as the nearly unstoppable John Wick.

Streep’s early career included Oscar-winning performances in Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice, establishing her reputation with remarkable speed. She continued moving between drama, comedy, musicals and literary adaptations. The Devil Wears Prada and Mamma Mia! introduced her to younger audiences, while The Iron Lady brought a third acting Oscar. Streep’s long record of nominations reflects not one fixed screen identity but an ability to adjust her technique to very different characters.

Denzel Washington

Washington developed his early reputation through St. Elsewhere, Cry Freedom and Glory, winning a supporting Oscar for the last film. Malcolm X established one of his defining performances, while Training Day brought a Best Actor Oscar. His later work has balanced action films, Shakespeare, directing and the stage. The Academy describes him as a leading man whose career stretches from powerful drama to major thrillers, supported by collaborations with directors including Spike Lee and Antoine Fuqua.
