Letitia Wright responded enthusiastically after Marvel announced that David Jonsson will play the adult Prince T’Challa in Black Panther 3. The news was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026, where Jonsson joined director Ryan Coogler and members of the returning cast.
Wright described the casting as emotionally meaningful because she already knew and respected Jonsson. The film is scheduled for December 15, 2028, but major story details remain secret. It is therefore too early to claim that Shuri has permanently stopped being Black Panther or that Jonsson will immediately replace every part of her role.
David Jonsson Will Play the Adult Prince T’Challa
Jonsson will portray T’Challa II, the son of King T’Challa and Nakia. The child was introduced near the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, when Nakia revealed that she and T’Challa had raised him privately in Haiti. The new casting allows Marvel to follow that character as an adult without recasting Chadwick Boseman’s original King T’Challa.

Wright said she felt the mantle was in good hands and celebrated Jonsson’s talent and character. Her reaction was not presented as disappointment or forced acceptance. She emphasized their existing personal connection and appeared proud that another British actor would continue the Wakandan story. Her comments suggested collaboration rather than a competition between Shuri and the adult Prince T’Challa.
Letitia Wright’s Shuri Already Became Black Panther
Shuri took the heart-shaped herb and assumed the Black Panther identity during Wakanda Forever. Her transformation followed the deaths of T’Challa and Queen Ramonda and reflected her struggle with grief and revenge. Marvel has not announced that Shuri will surrender the suit immediately in the third film. Jonsson’s arrival introduces another potential protector and heir, but the precise relationship between the two characters remains unknown.

Jonsson earned attention through the television drama Industry and films including Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus. His performances have combined emotional restraint, humor and intensity, qualities that could suit a character carrying an enormous family legacy. Marvel’s Comic-Con announcement positioned him as a major new franchise lead rather than a brief background appearance.
Winston Duke Welcomes David Jonsson to Black Panther
Winston Duke said the returning cast was happy to welcome Jonsson and viewed the new role as an emotional continuation of the franchise. Duke’s M’Baku became one of Wakanda’s most important leaders after beginning as a rival to T’Challa. His comments indicated that the established cast supports Jonsson, although they did not reveal how M’Baku, Shuri and Prince T’Challa will divide authority in the next film.
Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa Legacy Remains Central
Marvel chose not to recast Boseman’s T’Challa after the actor died in 2020. Wakanda Forever instead addressed the king’s death and focused on the people grieving him. Introducing T’Challa’s son allows the films to preserve that history while moving toward a new generation. Jonsson is playing a different character who inherited the name, not a replacement version of Boseman’s performance.
Letitia Wright and David Jonsson Share Black Panther’s Future
The most accurate conclusion is that Black Panther 3 will include both Wright’s Shuri and Jonsson’s adult Prince T’Challa. Marvel has confirmed Jonsson as an important new lead but has not explained who will wear the Black Panther suit throughout the film. The announcement opens a new chapter while leaving room for Shuri’s leadership, growth and relationship with the nephew she only recently discovered.
