Mandy Patinkin was one of the original stars of Criminal Minds, playing veteran profiler Jason Gideon. 2. Lola Glaudini (Elle Greenaway)
Lola Glaudini exited after the show’s second season. According to executive producer Ed Bernero, the actress wanted to leave Los Angeles and return to the East Coast, making it difficult to continue filming the series. Her character, Elle Greenaway, resigned from the BAU after a traumatic shooting.
3. Thomas Gibson (Aaron Hotchner)
Thomas Gibson played BAU unit chief Aaron Hotchner for 12 seasons before his departure in 2016. He was dismissed from the series following an on-set physical altercation with a writer-producer. The show later explained Hotch’s absence by having him leave the BAU to protect his son and focus on family.
4. Shemar Moore (Derek Morgan)
Shemar Moore chose to leave during Season 11 after more than a decade on the show. He explained that he wanted to pursue new creative opportunities and spend more time growing personally and professionally. Moore later starred in S.W.A.T. while occasionally expressing affection for his Criminal Minds family and returning for a guest appearance.
5. Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss)
Paget Brewster left at the end of Season 7 after contract negotiations and network decisions affected her role. Her earlier temporary exit also came during a period of behind-the-scenes cast changes that drew a strong reaction from fans. Fortunately for viewers, Brewster eventually returned and became a central part of both the original series and Criminal Minds: Evolution.
6. A.J. Cook (Jennifer “JJ” Jareau)
A.J. Cook briefly left during Season 6 after CBS chose not to renew her contract as part of budget-related casting changes.
